About Thatch Bar & Restaurant

The warmth of a cozy, well-worn pub mingles effortlessly with the inviting charm of a family-friendly restaurant at Thatch Bar & Restaurant. Flickering candlelight and rustic wooden beams create an atmosphere that feels both timeless and welcoming. The menu reflects this duality: hearty, comforting dishes sit alongside more refined options, showcasing local produce with honest flavors. Some signature plates, notably the slow-cooked lamb and the seafood chowder, garner consistent praise in various diners’ reflections, balancing tradition with subtle culinary creativity. Occasional busyness might extend wait times, but the attentive staff generally manage the flow with patience and good humor.

Dance of textures and fresh ingredients defines much of the dining experience here, a detail often highlighted in reviews and vibrant enough to be noticed in photos shared by visitors eager to capture the essence of the meal before it’s fully savored. Portions tend toward generous, reflecting a value-conscious approach that appeals to both locals and travelers. There’s a comfortable informality present—glassware isn’t always uniformly polished, but this quirk seems to blend with the overall charm rather than detract from it. Genuine interest in guests’ satisfaction punctuates the service, even if not every plate arrives in perfect harmony.

Community spirit resonates beyond the food, an undercurrent of local pride that infuses the experience. Conversations drift easily across tables, and the familiar hum suggests this is much more than a stopover for some. The Thatch Bar & Restaurant restaurant plays an important role in its setting, part eatery, part social hub. While the interior might not impress those seeking sleek modernity, it offers a snapshot into regional hospitality that strikes a balance between tradition and accessibility. Everyday conveniences and occasional inventive touches make it a place where visitors often find themselves returning to compare notes on past visits and explore new surprises within its evolving menu.

Called in for food while passing through. Food and staff fantastic. Highly recommend. Special mention to the lady running the show. Unbelievably good at her job. Under major pressure on busy match day and nothing was too much trouble and everyone greeted and served with a smile. You can tell the staff enjoy working here.

Myself and a friend stopped of here for a snack and decided to have dinner instead. It's immaculately clean. Fantastic menu and delicious food. We had our dinner in the open back resultant. The service was exceptional. Very friendly staff with a lovely smile and some banter as well.Ethna was extremely pleasant and I'm sure she is an asset to the Thatch Bar. The Guinness is well worth trying. The toilet's and the whole pub and restaurant were immaculately clean. Well done guys keep up the excellent work

It was my family's (3 generations) 1st time to eat here. We had stayed in Glenties 4 nights. The Thatch had been closed Tuesday and Wednesday so we ate here on the Thursday which was seafood special night and our last night in town. I ordered 1x chicken goujon and chips to share between the kids (both aged under 5). My Mum ordered John Dory special reasonably priced at €23. She was extremely satisfied with her fish and gave it 10/10. I ordered the 8 oz Rib eye Steak with chips, carrots, broccoli, asparagus, pepper sauce, mushrooms and onions at €22.50. To be honest, I was disappointed with my steak (quality, cut and way it was cooked) but then perhaps I'm a tough customer to please living on a beef farm. Furthermore, green beans and slivers of Courgettes replaced the advertised and promised asparagus. The wait between ordering and the food arriving was half an hour. Staff were friendly. I was pleasantly surprised when I went to pay to be informed that the kids meal was free when ordered with an adult meal. As a result, the overall rating for here swung towards excellent especially for value. Advice order fish specials on seafood special night (Thursday).

Everything about this restaurant was awesome. In particular, they have the best desserts in Donegal. The Sticky Toffee Pudding was incredible. The steaks were great and the chips were cooked perfectly. The pepper sauce was so good for both as well. The staff were very friendly, welcoming, and honest. We appreciated everything they did for us and they made us feel like locals. You really should not miss this place if you are in the area. We drove from Dungloe three times just to eat there, it’s that good. We have travelled too far away now and already miss it. Just make sure you get dessert, it’s the best part.

First night of the new menu with the new ownership and we are absolutely delighted! The staff is super friendly, I am in seven heaven because they serve Kinnegar Scraggy Bay and the food was original, delicious and looked amazing. We had the seafood chowder, yellow fin tuna salad, roast beef, Philadelphia chicken and the fish & chips and all the dishes were absolutely wonderful.
